Free screenshot redaction tool

Redact a screenshot before you share it.

Paste a screenshot into the private editor, cover the details that do not belong in the conversation, and download a fresh PNG.

Paste a screenshot inside the editor, or choose a PNG, JPEG, or WebP up to 25 MB. Download a new PNG after reviewing your redactions.

What this tool does

Keep the useful context without exposing the person behind it

Screenshots are useful because they capture exactly what happened. They are also easy to overshare. A support screenshot can expose a customer name, another ticket in the background, a private URL, a browser profile, a message preview, or an access token in developer tools.

Paste the screenshot directly into FreeRedact or choose the saved image. Review the suggested findings, then look beyond the highlighted areas. Pay special attention to browser tabs, bookmarks, address bars, account menus, profile photos, notifications, clocks, taskbars, and content visible behind a dialog.

The downloaded PNG is a newly rendered image with the approved redactions drawn into its pixels. The source screenshot is not changed, and the new image does not reuse the source file's metadata.

Keep the error. Cover the private details.

Keep the error, time, reproduction steps, and fictional ticket reference so support can investigate. Cover the identity and full token, including any repeated or wrapped copies. These hand-prepared illustrations show a review plan, not a recorded export from the editor.

Automatic suggestions

Automatic checks for common screenshot leaks

Screenshots mix text, faces, icons, and product interface elements. FreeRedact offers suggestions, while you decide what belongs in the final image.

Useful screenshot suggestions

  • Names, email addresses, common U.S. phone formats, U.S.-style street addresses, and account IDs
  • IPv4 addresses, private-looking URLs, API keys, access tokens, and payment details
  • Faces in profile photos, video calls, team lists, and customer records
  • Custom repeated text such as a customer, tenant, project, or environment name

Areas that need a visual pass

  • Tiny text in tabs, toolbars, side panels, terminal output, or a distant background may be missed
  • Icons, avatars, logos, and interface illustrations can occasionally resemble faces
  • A detector cannot tell whether a visible record belongs to a demo account or a real customer
  • Secrets with unusual formats may require a custom text search or a manual box

Screenshot privacy checklist

A screenshot often leaks information outside the area you intended to capture.

Use these checks: Follow the screenshot safety guide · Compare a fictional support example

  1. Check browser tabs, bookmarks, the address bar, profile controls, and window titles.
  2. Look behind dialogs and popovers for customer rows, chats, dashboards, or file names.
  3. Check notifications, taskbars, clocks, meeting tiles, and profile pictures.
  4. Zoom in on logs, terminals, network panels, URLs, and code for keys or session details.
  5. Open the downloaded PNG and confirm every box is opaque and fully covers the target.
  6. Rename the downloaded copy if its filename includes a person's name, case number, health condition, customer, project, or other private context.
Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste a screenshot instead of uploading a file?

Yes. Copy an image to your clipboard and paste it on the editor page. The image is handled in the browser and is not sent to FreeRedact.

What should I redact from a support screenshot?

Common items include customer names and emails, account and ticket IDs, private URLs, profile photos, access keys, unrelated records, and notifications. Keep the error and steps needed to understand the problem.

Is blurring a screenshot enough?

Blur can leave recognizable patterns, especially for short text and faces. FreeRedact uses solid redaction areas and creates a fresh output image.

Does FreeRedact remove screenshot metadata?

The download is a newly rendered PNG. Source metadata from the original PNG, JPEG, or WebP file is not copied into it.
